When I was a kid in school struggling with dyslexia I use to think about all of the successful dyslexics that had the same challenges with dyslexia. Knowing this helped me focus on it being a learning difference rather than a disability. I created this video The Power Of Dyslexia to help other people through some of their frustrations with dyslexia.
After posting this video on YouTube and seeing how it has helped so many people I decided to create this site in hopes of creating a collaborative community where dyslexics and those that are touched by dyslexia can share there stories, ideas and even offer advice to others.
Please join and help build a strong visual thinking community of dyslexics.

vaginal yeast infections men also are prone to yeast infections. Male yeast infections are widely overlooked and misunderstood. Most men can go through most of their lives without even knowing that they have a yeast infection because the symptoms are not easily apparent. When women get vaginal infections, it is a clue something is wrong. Mens bodies are quite different, so it isnt as obvious. Men can go for quite a long period of time without knowing they are affected until the yeast infection leads to other health problems.
Remember to think about the science of yeast infections as you look for a cure. For instance, one thing that you should keep in mind is that yeast infections happen when the bacteria on your body is wiped out or in some ways weakened. If you have taken an antibiotic, you will find that a yeast infection is something that can be quite common. To make sure that you are staying healthy, start eating a cup of plain yogurt a day. If the taste is too strong, sweeten it with honey or fruit, but stay away from flavored yogurts as they have preservatives that destroy the helpful bacteria.
Another great remedy for controlling yeast infections is garlic. In some cases, people can simply eat more garlic and get rid of the yeast infection, though other people do apply it topically. Garlic has many different benefits including lowering the blood pressure and reducing bad cholesterol. Rubbing garlic or crushed garlic on the affected area, or wrapping it up in cloth and applying it to the area can be helpful.
Apple cider vinegar is something that can help a great deal. You will find that it can be used internally through ingesting it, or topically, though in this case it should be strongly diluted. Some people do quite well by adding about a cup of apple cider vinegar to their baths and then taking a hot bath. Apple cider vinegar is a good way to boost your immune system as well, and you will find that this can go a long way towards helping you get the results that you want as well as towards preventing another outbreak.
When you or someone that you care about suffers from yeast infections, take some time and make sure that you are getting the results that you need. This is something that you will need to think about, so move forward with the right information.

He was outnumbered four-to-one at a Senate hearing on transportation and climate change, but nobody challenged CATO senior fellow Randall Os claim that rather than saving energy, mass transit uses massive amounts of it and produces copious amounts of greenhouse gas emissions to boot.
Transit produces as much greenhouse gas emissions [per passenger mile] as the average SUV, and consumes far more energy, OToole told the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation and Community Development. Transit is the culprit, not the savior.
Neither of the two senators there - Chairman Robert Menendez, D-NJ, and Sen. Mark Warner, D-VA - nor any of four pro-transit witnesses who testified alongside OToole directly addressed his point.
And nobody produced data proving OToole wrong, even though the stated purpose of the hearing was to chart a course towards lowering emissions in the transportation sector - which accounts for nearly one third of all air pollution in the U.S.
When OToole noted that, besides being energy guzzlers and polluters, urban mass transit systems are typically in a perpetual state of financial crisis requiring massive taxpayer subsidies, Menendez cited the $200 billion spent on highways over the last few decades. s a subsidy, he said.
No, senator, its not. As Gabriel Roth, research fellow at the Independent Institute who was present at the hearing, told me afterwards, gasoline taxes and other highway user fees have paid for nearly 90 percent of all the costs of building and maintaining the nations highway system.
In contrast, fares cover less than half of the operating costs and none of the capital costs associated with building and running mass transit.
A decades-long experiment in Os former hometown of Portland, Oregon, showed transit to be the loser in cost effectiveness as well. Portland spent $2 billion on an extensive light rail system and dramatically increased operating subsidies in inflation-adjusted dollars, yet transit still lost market share. Forty years ago, 4 percent of Portland commuters took transit to work; today its a pathetic 1.6 percent.
And what they dont tell you, OToole told me, is that the city spent another $2 billion to subsidize transit-oriented development. They have to build huge parking garages for the developers or its not commercially viable.
Michael Replogle, policy and strategy consultant for the Environmental Defense Fund, told the subcommittee that even the draconian cap-and-trade provisions in the House-passed cap-and-trade bill will not be enough to bring about an efficient reduction in transportation -related greenhouse gas emissions. But if the Senate passes a similar bill, electricity costs will skyrocket, dramatically increasing mass transit operating costs.
Since more than 90 percent of all urban travel is done by automobile anyway, OToole says, small improvements in autos can be far more significant than large investments in transit.
If youre really serious about lowering carbon emissions, supporting mass transit doesnt make much sense. Neither does expanding passenger rail lines, which slurp up large quantities of coal-generated electricity, if your major goal is to decrease energy use.
But if youre part of the politically correct pro-transit lobby, you just ignore such inconvenient facts. With a new administration in town ready to hand out billions of tax dollars for prohibitively expensive rail projects that cannot be justified on the basis of cost, energy use or even carbon emissions, all you have to do is stand in the transit bread line and wait for your hand-out.

1: Pediatr Blood Cancer. 2009 Jul 9. [Epub ahead of print] Septic arthritis as the initial manifestation of fatal Vibrio vulnificus septicemia in a patient with thalassemia and iron overload. Kuo CH, Dai ZK, Wu JR, Hsieh TJ, Hung CH, Hsu JH. Department of Pediatrics, Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Vibrio vulnificus infection is an uncommon but potentially fatal disease in children such that prompt recognition has prognostic implications. We describe here the case of a 9-year-old female with thalassemia and iron overload who presented with septic arthritis as an atypical initial manifestation of fatal V. vulnificus septicemia. This report underscores the possibility of septic arthritis as an early manifestation of V. vulnificus septicemia. Pediatricians should be alert to this extremely invasive disease, especially in children with iron overload. Pediatr Blood Cancer (c) 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [Epub ahead of print] RAGE expression and NF-kappaB activation attenuated by extracellular domain of RAGE in human salivary gland cell line. Chuong C, Katz J, Pauley KM, Bulosan M, Cha S. Oral Surgery and Diagnostic Sciences, College of Dentistry, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. The receptor for advanced-glycation-end-products (RAGE) has been implicated as a pro-inflammatory factor in chronic inflammatory conditions such as diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of the soluble-RAGE (sRAGE), the extracellular domain of RAGE, on RAGE expression and NF-kappaB translocation in human-salivary gland-cell-lines (HSG). Cells were stimulated with agonist S100A4, fusion protein of RAGE encompassing the extracellular domain of RAGE (ex-RAGE), ex-RAGE followed by S100A4, or S100A4 followed by ex-RAGE. Our study indicates that RAGE expression was highest at 150 microg/microl of S100A4 and efficiently down-regulated by 1.8-fold (P 0.05) when ex-RAGE was incubated prior to agonist S100A4. RAGE protein was also consistently down-regulated by 20-40% with pre-incubation of ex-RAGE. More importantly, nuclear translocation of p65 and p52 of NF-kappaB by S100A4 was inhibited in the presence of ex-RAGE, confirming anti-inflammatory function of ex-RAGE. In conclusion, ex-RAGE down-regulates RAGE expression and inhibits p65 and p52 activation in HSG, providing evidence that ex-RAGE functions as a "decoy" to RAGE-ligand interaction and thus potentially dampening inflammatory conditions. [Epub ahead of print] Modulation of SERCA in the chronic phase of adjuvant arthritis as a possible adaptation mechanism of redox imbalance. Strosova M, Karlovska J, Spickett CM, Orszagova Z, Ponist S, Bauerova K, Mihalova D, Horakova L. Institute of Experimental Pharmacology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Slovakia. Adjuvant arthritis (AA) is a condition that involves systemic oxidative stress. Unexpectedly, it was found that sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2 ATPase (SERCA) activity was elevated in muscles of rats with AA compared to controls, suggesting possible conformational changes in the enzyme. There was no alteration in the nucleotide binding site but rather in the transmembrane domain according to the tryptophan polar/non-polar fluorescence ratio. Higher relative expression of SERCA, higher content of nitrotyrosine but no increase in phospholipid oxidation in AA SR was found. In vitro treatments of SR with HOCl showed that in AA animals SERCA activity was more susceptible to oxidative stress, but SR phospholipids were more resistant and SERCA could also be activated by phosphatidic acid. It was concluded that increased SERCA activity in AA was due to increased levels of SERCA protein and structural changes to the protein, probably induced by direct and specific oxidation involving reactive nitrogen species. [Epub ahead of print] The effects of hormone replacement therapy on autoimmune disease: rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Holroyd CR, Edwards CJ. Rheumatology Department, Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, Southampton, UK. Autoimmune diseases are generally more common in women than men; however, there is no simple explanation for this. Sex hormones, especially estrogen (but also prolactin and testosterone), play important roles in these diseases. Estrogens are generally considered to enhance autoimmunity and have multiple effects on the immune system through various cell types and molecular pathways. There is much evidence supporting the role of estrogen in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): the disease occurs much more frequently in women, especially during the years of child-bearing potential, and commonly flares during pregnancy. The relationship between estrogen and the development of SLE is complex, however. Exogenous estrogens have been historically avoided in women with SLE due to the widely held view that they could activate disease and their use remains controversial. Current evidence from prospective trials suggests that there may be a small increased risk of mild/moderate flares in women with SLE taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but the risk of major flare does not appear to be increased. In rheumatoid arthritis, HRT does not appear to be associated with an increased risk of disease flare and may actually improve disease activity. In all individuals with autoimmune disease, the risk of venous thrombosis associated with oral HRT is an important factor that should also be considered. [Epub ahead of print] Japan College of Rheumatology 2009 guidelines for the use of tocilizumab, a humanized anti-interleukin-6 receptor monoclonal antibody, in rheumatoid arthritis. Department of Pharmacovigilance, Graduate School, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, 1-5-45 Yushima, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, 113-8519, Japan, koike.rheu@tmd.ac.jp. The introduction of biological agents targeting tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) has brought about a paradigm shift in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although these anti-TNF agents have excellent efficacy against RA, a substantial number of patients still show inadequate responses. In Western countries, such patients are already being treated with new classes of antirheumatic drugs such as abatacept and rituximab. Tocilizumab (TCZ) is a humanized monoclonal antibody developed in Japan against the human interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor. TCZ does not only alleviate the signs and symptoms of RA but also seems to prevent progressive bone and joint destruction. However, there is a concern that TCZ might increase the risk of adverse events such as infections since IL-6 plays a pivotal role in the immune system. Calculating the relative risks of specific adverse outcomes with TCZ use remains difficult, due to insufficient patient numbers enrolled in clinical trials to date. This review presents tentative guidelines for the use of TCZ for RA patients prepared by the Japan College of Rheumatology and based on results of clinical trials in Japan and Western countries. The guidelines are intended as a guide for postmarketing surveillance and clinical practice, and will be revised periodically based on the surveillance.

Can we talk about exercise?
There is an elephant in the room. Not a cute and helpful one like Horton. It is one of those proverbial elephants no one wants to address. Its a big and annoying issue that wont go away, yet everyone tries to ignore.
I do not fancy myself an elephant tamer. However, I have a constant urge to state the unspoken. So, lets get this out in the open.
Exercise is a touchy subject in the world of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Proponents of exercise strongly advocate it. No one I know actually opposes exercise, but it does raise several questions. I wonder why I do not hear them asked.
Early in 2006, when I began to suspect that I had RA, I began to read research articles about it. I was leery of internet Quackdom, so I limited myself to medical universities / hospitals like Cleveland Clinic, Mayo, and Johns Hopkins. Soon, I learned to expand to other reputable websites like WebMd and About.com. I just wanted the legitimate information, not fairy-world cures.
I read about protecting my joints by not doing things that caused pain or stress. That sounded very important to me, so I printed off lots of pages about it. Later, when I began to hear how some RA-ers are pressured to exercise, it struck me as odd. The two ideas are in direct conflict. I cannot protect my inflamed joints from use at the same time that I am using them to exercise.
I read about every theory I could find to explain the causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis. I did not read any which pointed to laziness or lack of exercise as a reason for RA. I am sorry to be blunt, but if sloth did not cause my RA, then workouts will not cure it.
My doctors have prescribed vitamins, chemo shots, newfangled funky Biologic drugs, rest, anti-inflammatory medicines and even a high Omega-3 diet to attempt to gain control of my RA. Funny, they have not prescribed exercise. Why not?
It would have been an appropriate prescription if I had come into the office with one of many other conditions. But, I was disabled by RA, not idleness. Some people are truly disabled by RA. And they cannot exercise for either fun or strength.
There are others who have RA, but who are not disabled. Many have times between flares, however brief, when they can safely exercise. And a few other RA-ers actually have only a small number of joints that are affected. Of course, they can exercise using the unaffected joints.
I do not feel comfortable asserting this position. But, frankly, I am never comfortable anymore. I am in pain. Its not endearing or attractive to say so, but its true.
I am very uncomfortable to sound like I am opposing something as wonderful as exercise. I half expect to be stoned. But, of course I am not arguing with exercise.
I am arguing with the preposterous proposition that if RA-ers would just exercise, they would feel better or get well. That is so absurd that I cant think anyone really believes it. If they do, I am willing to walk in their shoes. Can they stand in mine?
I wish that RA-ers would not have to ever defend themselves about exercise. We did not get Rheumatoid Arthritis because we were less active; we became less active because we have RA.

Yesterday ended having the following:
*2 Jasmine teas
*1 large salad with seaweed, mooli, lettuce, bell peppers, pomegranates, olive oil, salt, miso paste
*1 liter of water
No more bloating, gas or constipation so far. My skin is officially clear and beginning to glow from within. The bleeding is far less pronounced than before but still present. I know I need to lay off the salt and the coarse vegetables, as I am sure these are prolonging the bleeding symptoms (according to the healing diet I'm working with). Occasionally though, when I got out to eat with friends, the only 'raw' choice on the menu is a salad.
Today I started the day with the usual 1 liter of water which stimulated a bowel movement in the morning. I then had a green juice of celery and cucumber in the morning. Here's what I had the rest of the day:
*small blueberry, peach and strawberry smoothie
*Heirloom tomato salad for lunch
*Chamomile tea
*1 mango
*1 apple
*1 large salad with tomato, bell peppers, artichokes, lemon and olive oil dressing
*4 raw chocolate truffles
While I am now regular and the gas, constipation, bloating and mucous are now completely gone, I am still bleeding a little. Much less than when I began this journey 5 days ago, might I say. I think the next step is to begin moving toward softer, blended greens on a more regular basis until my colon has a chance to heal up.
One change which struck me today quite starkly: I am in the midst of writing a PhD thesis and my mind has been quite foggy lately. However, tonight while writing, I noticed a new clarity of thought; I was writing better than I have in weeks. Things that have seemed difficult to read and comprehend became very clear and simple. My mind feels much easier to organize. This is fascinating to me. Could this raw food diet actually affect the functioning of my mind so directly? I have heard testimonials of others claiming such things, but I never believed it until now. Amazing!
Both yesterday and today I have had a massive, prolonged headache. I presume this is a detox headache from coming off alcohol, chocolate, etc. Interestingly, the headache stopped when I had the chocolate truffles. Raw or not, according the Dr. Dave this kind of food is not optimal for healing, so I'm also going to try and steer away from that when I have the willpower!
More to come. Thanks for reading and happy healing.

Raw or not, according the Dr. Dave this kind of food is not optimal for healing, so I'm also going to try and steer away from that when I have the willpower!
More to come. Thanks for reading and happy healing.

Reviewing the records of 577 breast cancer patients, Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers found that women with newly diagnosed breast cancer who receive a breast MRI are more likely to receive a mastectomy after their diagnosis and may face delays in starting treatment. The study demonstrates that, despite the lack of evidence of their benefit, routine use of MRI scans in women newly diagnosed with breast cancer increased significantly between 2004 and 2005, and again in 2006.

Depending on your style and comfort zone this can be as dramatic as you want it to be, take darker colours than you would during the day time and make yourself stand out. Don’t be afraid to match colours with your outfit or even to use more than one colour on your eyes. If you want to stay conservative whilst making your night time statement then opt for a smokey eye look, apply a bit of eyeliner to your upper and lower lids, then fill the crease of your eye with black or dark brown shadow, finish with a lash lengthening black mascara.
You can get away with heavier foundation coverage in the evening as it will be less obvious, however, because of the lack of light you might even be able to get away with no foundation at all. This is especially good if you are planning on going dancing and getting hot, you don’t want smeared foundation.
If you are having very dramatic eyes then it is best to steer clear of a heavy lipstick, once again a clear gloss should do the trick. If you have opted for just some simple black eyeliner and mascara then you can go from something more exciting on your lips. Try the 50’s look, black eyeliner on just your top eyelid then some mascara; finish this look off with bright red lipstick. However, this look doesn’t work on everyone so be sure to try it out before you go out for the evening.

In a new special feature for the Star Trek Genesis trilogy, actor Walter Koenig complains that the self-proclaimed experts on the Internet consider the accent for his character (Pavel Chekhov) to be not only overdone but also unrealistic. (See "Pavel Chekhov's Screen Moments" in Disc 3 of the new set, the one for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home). Those nitpickers claim to have Russian friends who don't talk one bit like Chekhov. The problem is that those nitpickers have temporarily forgotten that Star Trek takes place in the future. A lot can happen to a language in forty years, not to mention 300 years. However, we're not going to let Walter Koenig off that easy. After we identify and distance ourselves from our attachment to the present, you'll see that there are still many nits to be had with this topic.
Let's stay in the present for a while, though. Where does a Russian learn English? There are classes in Moscow, I'm sure, but the disadvantage would be that there's little use for English beyond the classroom. London is perhaps the closest option for immersion learning of the English language. (Alaska is almost twice as far from Moscow as London is, though it is possible for our Russian to come from a place that is much closer to Alaska). Much of Canada and the lower 48 States are also present viable options for a Russian to learn English by immersion.
And let's face it, English is a difficult language to learn after childhood, it really requires immersion in a place where it is spoken for all every day necessities. Those of us who were born to an English-speaking family take for granted our skill making sense of all those letter combinations that sound one way in one context and a completely different way in a context that's only slightly different! Of course we also find learning other languages difficult. Russian uses a completely different alphabet, and Japanese uses four different sets of characters, one of which contains over 4,000 characters! If only there was a way we could just talk to anyone regardless of their language, with some magical device automatically taking care of translating what we say and what is said to us so that everyone understands the whole conversation.
As it happens, precisely such a device exists in the fictional universe inhabited by the Star Trek characters! It's called the universal translator. You don't have to believe that such a device could possibly be constructed in real life to accept it while watching Star Trek. So why exactly does Chekhov have to learn English to serve in Starfleet? I don't suppose they made Spock learn English either. Well, maybe Chekhov wanted to. By the time Chekhov joined Starfleet, the universal translator was true and tested technology. The very first episode of Star Trek: Enterprise shows an universal translator quickly getting up to speed in its understanding of the Klingon language. One would think that Earth's known languages would be piece of cake for the device. Since Leonard Nimoy does not put on a Vulcan accent for Spock, Walter Koenig seems to have very little reason to put on a Russian accent, even if it turns out that in the 23rd Century Russians who learn English really do talk like that.
There is one Chekhov moment in the new Star Trek film that still rings false for me, even though the rest of the audience laughed: Chekhov (now played by Anton Yelchin, supposedly a "real Russian") enters his voice authorization code for the Enterprise but the computer is confused because he says "Weektor" instead of "Victor." Maybe the authorization code is in English. But if the computer knows enough to recognize Chekhov's voice as that belonging to an authorized user, shouldn't it also know about Chekhov's linguistic oddities?
(A little side note on Koenig and Yelchin: if Wikipedia is to be believed, both actors have spent the vast majority of their lives in America).

REASONS FOR ANABOLIC STEROID TESTING
Why should there be anabolic steroid testing in sports? After all, a swimmer taking steroids cannot endanger national security, as he or she does not have access to defense secrets. A group of bodybuilders on anabolic steroids are not a danger to the public, unless someone steals their creatine or whey protein!
There are, in fact, two reasons for drug testing in sports given by sports federations. The first is to ensure faiess among athletes by prohibiting the use of performance enhancing drugs. The second is to protect the health of the athlete by prohibiting the use of drugs such as anabolic steroids that could be harmful.
Let us begin with a technical discussion of how drug tests work and how accurate they are. We will then discuss the countermeasures used by athletes to try to beat anabolic steroid testing.
A
IEF HISTORY OF DRUG TESTS
The Inteational Olympic Commission (IOC) carries out the most precise and accurate of all drug- testing programs. The IOC began drug testing at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. At first only tests for amphetamines and other related performance enhancing drugs were carried out. Anabolic steroids, as a group were added to the list of banned substances in 1973. The first Olympics in which tests for anabolic steroids, was carried out was the Montreal Olympics in 1976.
DRUG TESTS
URINALYSIS
The most frequently used drug test for Anabolic steroid testing is urinalysis. The bodybuilder or other athlete is notified of the test after being awarded first, second or third place in a competition. Athletes who competed, but did not place in the top three, may also be chosen at random to be tested. The person must present himself/herself to the testing site immediately after the awards ceremony. The athlete is asked to urinate in the presence of an official to prevent sample tampering. The urine sample is divided into two samples: sample one is stored under close security, only to be used pending the outcome of tests on sample two. Sample two, the test sample, is then subjected to various forms of chemical analysis. One of the most commonly used tests is the gas chromatography procedure.
GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY
In this test a chromatograph converts the urine into gas, screening out traces of forbidden compounds. Under pressure the gas passes through very sensitive columns, which separate the various substances into easily detectable components. If metabolites (breakdown products) of anabolic steroids are detected, the next step is to use a device called a mass spectrometer to determine exactly which steroids are in the athletes sample.
LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY
Instead of using the gas chromatography method, a variation known as liquid chromatography may be used for anabolic steroid testing. Once again, specialized columns of chemicals are used. The liquid urine is exposed to these columns, and the various constituents of the urine climb the columns to different levels. Drug components can be separated by color and distance
RADIOIMMUNOASSAY (RIA)
This test was developed in the early seventies, and was considered at the time to be the end-all to drug use in sports. Because RIA involves the use of radioactive isotopes, the number of laboratories which can carry out this test are limited. For this procedure, radioactive isotopes and specific foreign substance antibodies are added to a urine sample. If no banned steroids are present, the antibodies and isotopes combine and can be filtered out of the solution. There would be no remaining radioactivity in the sample. In a positive sample, the antibodies do not combine with the isotopes, and radioactivity remains. The chromatography and mass spectrometer tests are considered the top of the line in anabolic steroid testing, and have replaced RIA tests.
TESTOSTERONE RATIO TESTING
In the past, male athletes who knew that competitors at a particular event were to be tested for steroids, would simply discontinue the use of the steroids well in advance of the competition. When they stopped anabolic steroid use, they substituted pure testosterone. The purpose was to maintain strength, size, and other performance gains.
Scientists and drug testers became aware of this countermeasure and in response they developed a counter-countermeasure. As testosterone is broken down, one of its breakdown products, epitestosterone, is produced. The normal ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone is 1:1. When an athlete takes artificial testosterone, the amount of testosterone in the urine is increased, but the amount of epitestosterone excreted does not change. Thus the ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone increases dramatically. If the athletes ratio exceeds 6:1, the athlete is disqualified. For example, one powerlifter was tested and his ratio was 100:1!
Not only is the ratio indicative of testosterone use by an athlete, it also reveals to the tester whether or not the individual was using high levels of anabolic steroids. When an athlete uses anabolic steroids, the bodys own testosterone levels are reduced dramatically. When the user stops taking steroids, the bodys own testosterone production resumes, to bring testosterone levels back to the pre-steroid state. In some cases, the athletes body over-produces testosterone, thus shifting the testosterone to epitestosterone ratio upwards, past the acceptable upper limit of 6:1.
TESTING ACCURACY
From 1986 to 1988, Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson was tested 19 times for anabolic steroids at various competitions. Although he was using anabolic steroids throughout this period, all tests were negative. Even in 1988, Olympic athletes using steroids managed to pass sophisticated IOC anabolic steroid tests. More than 50 male athletes who competed in the Seoul Olympics were later found to have used anabolic steroids in the six months prior to the games. These results came to light after a more sophisticated testing procedure was carried out on 1100 urine samples (collected during the games), which had been stored.
The present detection capabilities for some steroids are in the .25 mg (nanogram) range. This means that the specific metabolites for a drug such as Deca-durabolin can be measured, even when they exist in a concentration of one quarter part per billion! In most cases the tests can detect steroid use for only as long as the steroid is exerting a physiological effect on the athletes system.
There are numerous factors that increase or decrease a bodybuilders chances of passing or failing an anabolic steroid test. These include:
The type of anabolic steroids used
How long the individual was on the drugs
The dosages used
The purity of the steroids
The type of steroid cycle followed
The individuals genetics
Its because of these factors that bodybuilders and other athletes have developed a whole series of anabolic steroid test counter measures to be drug tests.

Going on a trip is usually thought of as a wonderful experience, one that you and your family may have planned and looked forward to for some time. To have the most fun - to get the most out of the experience - it's important that you and your loved ones have the means to overcome those little ailments and discomforts that can make the experience range from mildly unpleasant to downright unbearable. How can we include a little "Trip Insurance" to our already overstuffed carry-ons or mini-vans? Aromatherapy has an answer with some readily-available essential oils.
Motion sickness, bug bites, digestive difficulties, and general travel weariness - to name a few - are common discomforts experienced when venturing away from home. A small collection of inexpensive essential oils can provide great relief from these amusement-threatening ailments. "Treatment" with these oils is simple - ranging from inhaling a little oil from a tissue, to adding to a bath, to drinking a drop with a warm cup of water. And, thankfully, relief often comes quickly because of the oils' powerful properties and compatibility with our own bodies.
Peppermint and Ginger Essential Oils - Motion Sickness, Stomach Troubles, and Waking Up
Well begin with "getting there" - the beginning of any trip starts with traveling. By car, boat, plane, or otherwise, motion sickness commonly effects many people, particularly children. This can easily make the traveling portion of your experience absolutely no fun. Enter Peppermint essential oil.
Peppermint has long been used to calm uneasy stomachs, and is easily used. One drop (it is strong!) in a cup of warm water, sweetened if you like, can be sipped before and during the voyage. For the fussy ones, a drop can be added to a small amount of honey and taken from a spoon for the same effect.
Ginger essential oil is also known for it's calming of upset stomachs - a little inhaled from a tissue or diluted in a carrier oil and rubbed on the abdomen may bring relief. A drop of Ginger can also be taken in warm water as a strong ginger tea - this may be effective for some food-related stomach issues, particularly when combined with the abdomen massage method.
Peppermint can also be uplifting to the weary driver or passenger - a drop or two placed on tissues in the car or near your seat will release the aroma into your surroundings. Be careful with this oil however, as getting it on sensitive areas of the skin (directly under the nose, and certainly near the eyes) can bu a little. Tissues with the oil on it should not touch these areas directly.
Lavender Oil - The Great Soother
Lavender has been called "a medicine chest in a bottle" due to its wide range of effects. The aroma of Lavender is uplifting and relaxing, useful for stress in congested airports or crowded highways. Breathing this very safe essential oil is effective for adults and children alike - inhaling drops from a tissue directly, or from one"s placed in your surroundings can help you and your companions be at ease.
Thyme, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus - Cleansing and Keeping Bugs and Bits at Bay
Lavender essential oil is also an effective wound-healer, due to it's anti-inflammatory, mild antibacterial, and skin-regenerative effects. It can be used directly in case of bus, mixed 50:50 with Tea Tree and put on band aids to prevent infection, or blended with Thyme Linalol and Eucalyptus (2:4:2) and added to a bowl of water for an effective disinfectant wash.
Lavender is very useful for treating bites and stings - just place a little "neat" (undiluted) on the affected area. This versatile oil is also a component of an insect repellent blend comprised of equal parts of Lavender, Thyme Linalol, and Peppermint, and a double-dose of Lemongrass essential oil. A drop or more placed on tissue or cloth about your room can keep the insects out of your space; 3 drops of this blend per teaspoon of carrier oil can be regularly applied to the skin - or you may mix a similar amount into any lotion you may have.
Lavender can be used in combination with Geranium, Chamomile, Peppermint and Eucalyptus oils in relieving the effects of jet-lag. Getting out of this weary state as quickly as possible makes any trip more enjoyable. This requires getting yourself and companions in-synch with local time, having good rest at night and perhaps a gentle lift in the moings and throughout the day.
Add Chamomile to Calm the Kids
To get yourself into the swing of local time, relax and be ready for bed with equal parts of Lavender and Geranium essential oils - Chamomile may also be used in place of the Geranium, and works especially well for soothing children (if they are irritable for ANY reason). Add a few drops to a bath or use in a massage oil. For a moing eye-opener, do the same using equal amounts of Peppermint and Eucalyptus. You will find these useful at other times when you need a little clarity and lightening-up.
Lemon Oil - Purifying
Lemon Oil also has some wonderfully diverse uses. It is effective as an antibacterial, but not so strong as to be an irritant. Adding several drops per quart to your drinking water will help purify it, and the water can act as a disinfectant to be used in washing your fruits and vegetables the need for this certainly depends on your location, but it not a bad idea whenever bacterial contamination may be a possibility. Further, regularly drinking water with added lemon oil can gently stimulate the lymphatic and digestive systems, helping alleviate that sluggish feeling that often accompanies extended plane and car travel.
Eucalyptus Oil for Cooling and Colds
Eucalyptus - the Narrow Leaf variety is a favorite - has a great range of uses as well. It can cool the body when too hot, and protect it when too cold. It is found in almost all formulas used to relieve congestion, can support circulation, and bring lightness to a travel-weary head.
Eucalyptus oil can be used like peppermint to uplift and invigorate during long intervals in an automobile. It can be added to a cool bath or used on a cold compress in cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (accompanied by, of course, copious amounts of water and electrolytes!), and used in a similar manner to reduce fever. Eucalyptus oil may be blended with Geranium as a massage oil (3 drops Eucalyptus and 2 drops Geranium per teaspoon of carrier oil) to relieve heat cramps. For congestion relief, to a drawn bath, add 1 drop Eucalyptus, 3 drops Lemon, 2 drops Thyme, and 2 drops Tea Tree - soak and breathe deeply - or simply add a few drops to a steaming bowl of water and inhale.
These are just a few examples of ways to make your travel experiences more enjoyable with aromatherapy. With a little effort, you can expand your knowledge of these oils, discovering further uses, and find other oils that work well for your particular needs. These essential oils are readily available, and fairly inexpensive - though caution should be used when buying oils, as some can be adulterated, and others are mass-produced with techniques that may limit their therapeutic benefits. The more pleasant and "well rounded" an oil"s aroma, generally the higher the quality. Your nose will know! And as with any aromatherapy application, start slowly - essential oils deserve a healthy respect.

To support the indispensable role that science and technology play in maintaining national and economic security, the United States should ensure the open exchange of unclassified inspection ignoring the small risk that it could be misused for misfortune by terrorists or rogue nations, says a new report by the National Digging Council. Because science and technology are truly global pursuits, U.S. universities and digging institutions necessity prolong to welcome foreign-born field and engineering students, said the commission of former national security leaders and senior university researchers and administrators that wrote the report.
While concerns about certain types of research findings falling into the wrong hands are legal and safeguards are needed, the gains in science and technology that current from the free swap of information low override the slight risks, the report says. Conservative measures to curtail the flow of essential data or people would significantly disrupt advances that are critical to U.S. military and economic security. Meeting the challenges of future technological or biological threats depends upon developments that can only come from long-term academic probing.
"In the years following the Sept. 11 attacks, experimentation institutions have established policies and procedures that address concerns on every side security," said body co-govern Jacques S. Gansler, prior U.S. undersecretary of defense and weakness president for research at the University of Maryland, College Park. "However, both the protection and scientific communities agree that losing our leading verge in information and technology is one of the greatest threats to nationwide security. Unnecessary or hurtful-conceived restrictions could jeopardize the scientific and technical move along that our land depends upon."
Although Federal Security Finding Directive 189 (NSDD 189) was enacted to inspirit that root enquire balance open to weekly and foreign participation, many guidance policies and practices entertain effectively reversed this in recent years, the report says. To ensure that both safety and detailed interests are protected, the federal government should establish a permanent entity, preferably a Science and Security Commission, that would review policies regarding the tit for tat of facts and the participation of exotic-born scientists and students in research. The report suggests that the commission be co-chaired by the national custodianship adviser and the director of the White House Business of System and Technology Custom, and include representatives from academic research institutions and national security agencies.
"The U.S. security and delve into communities need to get ready together to weigh the latest information about potential threats and certain the continuation of scientific research that could help mitigate them," said committee co-chair Alice P. Gast, president of Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. "Establishing this standing stiff would allow the nation to walk out of the set aside balance between science and shelter."
WINNING ACTION
After holding a series of regional meetings on university campuses with a broad range of officials from security and ivory-tower research institutions, the Subject Research Council committee identified specific actions that should be taken to care for advertise Stock Exchange of scientific research -- all of which could be addressed by the proposed Skill and Security Commission. They subsume:
* ENSURING THAT GRANTS AND CONTRACTS AWARDED TO U.S. UNIVERSITIES AND RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS DO NOT LIMIT THE REPORTING OF UNCLASSIFIED RESEARCH. Although the principles and much of the choice of words of NSDD 189 is incorporated into federal acquisition regulations, contracting officers and universities sometimes condone them, the report says. In too, federal funding agencies should make clear to industrial grant recipients that restrictive clauses governing airing or the participation of foreign-born scientists should not be passed down to universities subcontracted to conduct key experimentation.
* REVIEWING THE MANY OF RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT ARE CATEGORIZED AS "SENSITIVE BUT UNCLASSIFIED." Numerous concerns procure been raised about the increasing use of this designation, which limits the scientific community's right-hand to publish the results of basic dig into and restricts participation of overseas-born researchers. A review that examines the frequency of these restrictions and other restrictive clauses should be performed annually.

Both agencies insist on lists that bar the export of certain technologies and bumf to foreign countries. * FOSTERING A IMAGINATIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR SUPRANATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING SCHOLARS IN THE UNITED STATES. Foreign-born researchers are significant contributors to U.S. science and technology endeavors, the report says. In fact, between 1990 and 2004, more than one-third of all Nobel prizes in the Connected States have gone to extrinsic-born recipients. The success of many U.S. universities and research institutions depends on attracting the best and brightest students both at welcoming comfortable with and outside. After tighter visa restrictions were enforced following the Sept. 11 attacks, international swot enrollment decreased dramatically. Although some visa restrictions have in the offing been lifted and foreign enrollment is again on the rise, the visa clearance process should continue to be monitored, the description says. In putting together, the administration and Congress should consider extending fugitive visas for those working in high-demand research areas and creating a new nonimmigrant visa category in favour of doctoral and postdoctoral scholars. And the Technology Alert List -- which restricts some non-U.S. students and scientists from working on legitimate technologies that could be misused to threaten subject security -- should be revised to include only areas of study that have unequivocal implications in spite of national security.

Purchasing pharmaceuticals from Canada can be a thrifty way to decrease your monthly health insurance budget. Instead of stumbling through complicated American health policies, consider pharmacists in Canada. They are accessible, convenient and are pleased to serve you.
Step 1
Obtain a prescription from a licensed physician. Depending on the medication you're seeking, you'll need to schedule an appointment with a doctor to ensure your claim for medication is legitimate. A doctor, and only a doctor, can prescribe medication and without this prescription, you'll be unable to purchase drugs even in the United States.
Step 2
Once you have your prescription, log on to the Internet. Make sure that you find a licensed, accredited online pharmacy. Prescription drugs require a doctor's approval for a reason, and you'll want to make sure that you are ordering from professionals who take your health and their business seriously. A few examples of accredited online pharmacies are Canada Drugs and American Drug Club. These sites are widely used and will accurately fill a prescription.
Step 3
Once you are comfortable with your online pharmacy choice, you'll need to send a copy of your prescription to the pharmacy. Again, do not deal with a pharmacy that claims to fill prescription drugs without a prescription. If you call ahead, you may be able to fax a prescription to a pharmacist in order to fill a prescription fast. Either way, you'll be unable to complete your online form until the prescription is accepted by the pharmacist.
Step 4
Once the prescription is accepted, log back on to the online pharmacy. Follow the simple steps and then use the secure ordering form to submit your order. Depending on the site, your order will ship in one to three weeks. Many of the online pharmacies offer rush orders for a higher fee. Once you have received your order, double-check the receipt to make sure that it is indeed from the correct pharmacy, and to ensure you were charged the correct amount.
